Official Support

This page explains what to prepare, what each feature does, and where the current limits are. It is written for first-time users, not for developers.
Before You Need It Offline
Prepare speech recognition while you still have a connection.
Offline-ready speech translation depends on preparation. Install the speech recognition assets for the languages you plan to speak, transcribe, or use in conversation. Kenning will also check whether the on-device translation model is available on your iPhone or iPad.
Quick setup checklist
- Use a supported iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence available.
- Open Kenning before your trip and let the app check model readiness.
- Install the speech recognition assets for the languages you will use.
- Allow microphone and speech recognition permissions when prompted.
What this affects
- Voice input needs the speech language installed.
- Conversation mode needs speech support for both sides.
- Video and audio translation need speech-to-text before translation.
- Text typed by hand does not need microphone permission.
How To Use The Main Features
Pick the source that matches your situation.
Typed text
Paste or type the text, choose the languages and style, then translate when the model is ready.
Conversation
Choose two languages. Record one person at a time. Kenning translates after the recording stops and can speak the result aloud.
Photos
Take or import a photo, choose horizontal or vertical text, and let OCR pull the words into the translation flow.
Video and audio
Choose a media file with speech. Kenning prepares the audio, transcribes it, then translates the transcript.
Custom styles
Open Translation Style Settings to use a built-in style, duplicate one, or add your own instruction.
FAQ
Common first-time questions
Do I only need to download speech recognition assets for offline translation?
Speech assets are required for speech-to-text, including voice input, media transcription, and conversation. Translation also depends on a supported device and the on-device Apple Intelligence model being ready.
Is conversation translation simultaneous?
No. Kenning is turn-based. One person records, Kenning translates after recording, then the translation can be played aloud.
Can it translate vertical text in photos?
Yes. When importing or taking a photo, choose Vertical Text when the writing is vertical. You can also choose the column order before OCR runs.
Does photo translation replace text on the original image?
No. Kenning extracts text from the image and translates that text. It does not redraw the translated words back onto the photo.
Can I translate a video?
Kenning can use the speech in a video. It extracts or prepares the audio, turns speech into text, then translates the transcript. It does not create a finished subtitled video.
Can I rely on it for legal or medical wording?
Use Kenning for understanding and drafts. For legal, medical, contractual, or other high-risk content, have the final wording checked by a qualified person.
